Most homes built today in the southern United States are constructed on a crawl space, slab on grade or basement. A home’s foundation is designed to transfer the load of the structure plus its contents to the underlying soil. Expansive clay soils swell when soil moisture levels increase and shrink when moisture levels decrease. Swelling and shrinking of this soil results in movement and settlement of the home's foundation. Another common cause of foundation problems is the settlement of improperly compacted fill soil, or debris laden fill soils.
